What to wear for a trendy retail job interview?

Posted by admin on November 29th, 2009 and filed under trendy accessories | 4 Comments »

I have an interview for a popular trendy clothing store in my area. When I talked to the manager on the phone she told me to "dress to impress" and "wear lots of accessories" for the interview. Usually I would play it safe and wear a black suit, but I want to honor her requests, so Im not sure what to wear! Help!

Whatever you wear, make sure you feel comfortable in it. If you get the job, the manager will expect you to generally dress like that.

Good luck

Dress like the people that work there. You cant go wrong with your basic black suit pants and one of the stores tops and accessories. Play the part. When you get in you can be basic black.

Yes, dress like the people that work there, ie: assume dress style wise that you have the job, and look like you fit in.

Go and have a look at the shop and see what other staff are wearing, and ask your friends what they would wear.

One of the hints at an interview question that the manager has given you is: "tell me about why you dressed as you did today, your choice in colours, and accessories?" If they are a trendy clothes store, they expect you to know about – ta da – trendy clothes! Because simply, when you are on the shop floor, and a customer approaches you and says "is this trendy" they expect you to be able to say why it is/not and if it would suit that customer. That knowledge creates difference, and that creates customer loyalty. I would also be prepared to answer the questions:
    - how big a part does fashion play in your life
    - who are your favourite designers, and why
    - how often do you read fashion magazines or blogs, and which ones
    - what are the current and emerging styles
    - what is your favourite piece of clothing, and why
    - if you had £10/$10 and had to fashion-update an outfit, what would you spend it on and why?

I would always suggest that you stay on the cautious side, and black is always a great basic interview colour. But in this case, you could go a bit forward with the blouse colour, shoe style, and accessories at minimum.

    Good Luck!
